SAINT-PETERSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY FOR WATERWAYS COMMUNICATIONS

The precise answer to the question “where the real sea dog, the conqueror of the seas and the oceans, the ship captain is taught?” lies in Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications and long since. It is one of the oldest transport State Universities of Russia with its history that goes back to 1809 maintaining its prestige among Russian and foreign naval technical universities for already two centuries. One of the greatest advantages of the University for Waterways Communications is its location. The University is situated in Saint-Petersburg, the second largest and the most beautiful city of Russia, its scientific and cultural capital. The sea port is located close to the University, thus the students have the opportunity to become acquainted with the waterways transport organization in practice and get filled with a spirit of future profession.
Applicants can choose among 29 specialties and obtain Bachelor's, Master's Degree or Specialist's Qualification to be able to work on ships of the inland fleet and navy and coastal enterprises. The most popular faculties are those with the names connected with adventures and scientific discoveries: Faculties of Ship Navigation, Ship Mechanics, Electrical Engineering, Shipbuilding, Operation of Port Equipment and Transport Terminals. Upon graduation a student receives the Degree of Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications and a certificate confirming that this degree is recognized in Great Britain and approved by London Institute of Marine Engineers. This significant appendix gives career opportunities to a graduate on the world's level.
At present approximately 10 000 students from more than 40 countries of the world study in the University. It maintains close friendly and scientific relations with State Universities of Germany, Holland, Great Britain, Poland, China and many other countries. Professors and students often go abroad for their trainings.
In the framework of the scientific activity development, the University participates in large state scientific programs “Transport of Russia” and “The World Ocean” and works on the new scientific projects of state importance. Paying great attention to the practical training of the students, the University opened the educational and training centre where one can find a unique computer complex (simulator) intended for developing and strengthening practical skills of ship navigating for students of the Ship Navigation Faculty and also for retraining of experienced navigators with a degree.
To create comfort and good conditions for study and life, students are provided with modern student hostels, medical centre, students' club, and research scientific and technical library. A great attention is traditionally paid to sport. In sport department boxing, basketball, swimming, aerobics, and such rare types of sport as sailing and cross-country skiing, polyathlon are trained. The University possesses its own yachts.

Upon successful completion of the University, the graduate gets higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating Degree/qualification and speciality. The graduate also gets additional document “European Appendix”, which allows to get its equivalence in any of 45 European and other countries signed up to the “Bologna convention on the Recognition of Qualifications Concerning Higher Education” and to further education or apply for a prestigious job in these countries. The University graduates unlike others do not have any problems with the choice of future job. Wide theoretic background and great practical skills enable graduates to find a job according to their speciality right after graduation and to work as navigators, mechanics, directors of seaports and industrial enterprises. The charge for nostrification of foreign educational documents to obtain “Certificate of equivalence” in the Rosobrnadzor of Russian Federation obligatory for all international students is approximately 150 USD. Students prepare the set of educational documents and undergo the procedure of equivalency by themselves and at their own expence.
The above-mentioned fees for tuition, accommodation in student hostel, life and health insurance are valid only for 2010/2011 academic year.
Fees for tuition and accommodation in student hostels in Russian State Universities are fixed in Russian national currency – “Russian ruble”. Fees indicated in USD are approximate equivalent of tuition fees in Russian rubles by the time of processing this booklet. The actual cost for tuition and accommodation in Russian State Universities fees may be corrected slightly the date of invoice for tuition payment issuing in accordance with exchange rate USD – Russian ruble in the International Exchange Market.
During the initial registration procedure the candidate pays a registration fee of 300 USD which covers the charges for the issuance of the invitation letter for studies, sending the original and other documents to the candidate's country of the permanent residence by express mail, meeting the candidate at the international airport in Moscow/Saint-Petersburg, transfer to the domestic airport/train station in Moscow, meeting at the airport/train station of Saint-Petersburg and accompanying to the Academy, drawing up documents for admission to Academy for studies, registration fee, etc. The above mentioned amount doesn't include the cost of the airfare/train ticket Moscow-Saint-Petersburg. Average food expenses in Saint-Petersburg are 200-300 USD per month. When first entering Russia, the candidate should have about 500 USD to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
