In terms of geography, economy and culture, the towns lying in the central part of Russia are absolutely unique. They are located close to Moscow, the capital of Russia, which contributes greatly to their rapid development in all vital spheres, such as science, culture, and finance. Tambov is situated 450 kilometers away from Moscow, it is a town populated by approximately 350 thousand people; 10 % of them are students of the higher education establishments. Tambov is a town, which follows the essential trends of our time, but still does not forget its historic traditions. To a great extent, this is because of Tambov State Technical University (TSTU), a large center of science, research, and education. For many years now, the University has been the leader among dozens of State Universities and branches of other Russian higher education establishments located in Tambov. It keeps on being the main student center of the town because to study in Tambov State Technical University is both prestigious and promising.
Tambov State Technical University was founded in 1958. From the very beginning, the University has been training engineers in production and manufacturing, so the course contents are as close to practice as they can be. The range of specialities and areas of training is extremely wide. Candidates may apply for a variety of courses to receive Bachelor's Degree (4 years) and Master's Degree (2 years), or Specialist's Qualification (5 years). There are a lot of scientific research centers and experimental institutes on the basis of the University, which are involved in development, implementation and application of new technologies. Students take an active part in their activities and pick up the practical skills in resolving professional tasks. The University prepares the students to be competent specialists in their field of expertise as well as in information technologies to face the competitive employment market. Many of the University's graduates are presently heads of the large industrial enterprises and companies of Russia; they work for the administration authorities of various levels, including the Russian government. The University is constantly growing by widening the range of specialities with an interest to prepare highly competent specialists for the competitive employment market. The University is accommodated in six big buildings with classrooms and laboratories, there is a computerized central library, 5 comfortable student hostels, 4 student cafes, a university clinic, and several summer camps in the countryside.
Life is rich and interesting for the University students. Sports competitions and academic contests take place regularly. For a long time now, the “Student Spring” Festival has been a special event celebrated all over the town. The “TSTU Newsletter” is the University's official scientific journal, there is a University's TV studio that broadcasts regularly on the whole region. As a center of high information technologies, Tambov State Technical University is much involved in the campaign aimed to introduce computer and information technologies not only in the educational process, but for the overall benefit of the innovative information technologies in the economy, industry, management and the administration of Tambov and other regions of Central Russia. The University was twice awarded the Russian Government Prize for the development of scientific and research bases of IT in the area of education for higher education establishments and for the general contribution in the modern education and science.
In the latest years, there are new opportunities for international cooperation in the area of education: professors from the USA and Canada give lectures on problematic issues; TSTU and universities of Britain and Germany exchange students; international conferences are held in Tambov; the University is running a number of programs in cooperation with universities of Germany, Denmark, China, Switzerland and other countries. There are over 7 000 students at the University coming from about 30 countries of Asia, Near and Middle East, Africa, Europe and America. All international students are guaranteed to be accommodated in comfortable student hostels, where they share a room with one or two fellow-students. Most of rooms are provided with an Internet access. The hostel has a kitchen on each floor, where you can cook the meals you like. Students can go to the University gym, fitness center, or swimming-pool, Internet café, reading rooms, everything for studies, leisure and unforgettable student life.
Upon successful completion of the University, the graduate gets a higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating Degree/ qualification and speciality. The graduate also gets an additional document “European Appendix”, which allows its holder to get its equivalence in any of 45 European and other countries signed up to the “Bologna Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications Concerning Higher Education” and to further education or apply for a prestigious job in these countries.

Candidates for studies in Russian State Universities, who don't speak Russian language, are firstly admitted to the Foundation Course (duration is 1 academic year) to study Russian language and improve the level of knowledge in major special subjects up to the required for further study at the University on the chosen specialty. The charge for nostrification of foreign educational documents to obtain “Certificate of equivalence” in the Rosobrnadzor of Russian Federation obligatory for all international students is approximately 150 USD. Students prepare the set of educational documents and undergo the procedure of equivalency by themselves and at their own expence.
The above-mentioned fees for tuition, accommodation in student hostel, life and health insurance are valid only for 2010/2011 academic year.
Fees for tuition and accommodation in student hostels in Russian State Universities are fixed in Russian national currency – “Russian ruble”. Fees indicated in USD are approximate equivalent of tuition fees in Russian rubles by the time of processing this booklet. The actual cost for tuition and accommodation in Russian State Universities fees may be corrected slightly the date of invoice for tuition payment issuing in accordance with exchange rate USD – Russian ruble in the International Exchange Market.
During the initial registration procedure the candidate pays a registration fee of 300 USD which covers the charges for the issuance of the invitation letter for studies, sending its original and other documents to the candidate's country of the permanent residence by express mail, meeting the candidate at the international airport in Moscow, transfer to the train station of Moscow and transfer to Tambov, meeting at the train station in Tambov and accompanying to the University, drawing up documents for admission to University for studies, registration fee, etc. The above-mentioned amount doesn't include the cost of the train ticket Moscow-Tambov.
Average food expenses are 200-300 USD per month. When first entering Russia, the candidate should have about 500 USD to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
