FIRST MOSCOW STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

First Moscow State Medical University (Moscow Medical I.M. Setchenov Academy) is the largest medical educational and scientific complex with a rich history closely associated with the history of medical education and healthcare in Russia. The University is considered to be the cradle of the majority of Russian medical schools, scientific medical societies; first medical magazines, study guides and work books appeared there. It enriched world science by numerous discoveries; it gave Russia outstanding scientists and taught hundreds thousands of doctors who devoted their life to Medicine.
The foundation of First Moscow State Medical University dates back to the 18th century and it's bound up closely with the history of Moscow State University. The University started with the Medical Faculty of Moscow Imperial University open in 1758 at the suggestion of the great Russian scientist M.V. Lomonosov and the count I.I. Shuvalov. Later it has been transferred into First Moscow Medical Institute; from 1990 it has been given the name of Moscow Medical I.M. Setchenov Academy, and was renamed to First Moscow State Medical University in 2010. The University celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2008. At present First Moscow State Medical University is a world known educational and scientific center for teaching, credentialing and advanced training of medical and pharmaceutical staff. Serious research and applied scientific activities, high quality medical assistance for the population, popularization of medicine and pharmacy achievements are closely connected with the educational process. The University is the head of educational methodical association of medical and pharmaceutical higher education establishments of Russia.
First Moscow State Medical University incorporates Clinical Center which comprises 17 clinics of different profiles for 3000 people with central clinical diagnostic laboratory and 11 laboratories, Radiodiagnosis Department with 7 subdivisions, 19 interclinical treatment and diagnostic services able to treat in 44 thousand patients and 280 thousand out patients every year; Polyclinic for students and teaching staff; Central Scientific Medical Library, and a Museum of History of Medicine.
The students of the University have got the unique opportunity to do scientific and research activities in up-to-date equipped classes and laboratories, to work as a trainee in the University's clinics in all specializations, to get consultations from the most popular professors in the field of Medicine and to use the University's infrastructure at educational aims. At their free time, students take part in numerous sport and artistic workshops situated on the territory of the clinical campus. The classrooms of the University are provided with the modern equipment complying with the latest standards: comfortable desks, projectors and projector screens, all necessary additional materials and models for object lessons. Laboratories with essential research and practice materials in the field of Medicine, Biology and Chemistry are at students' free use.
The University comprises the Scientific Center with 61 laboratories and 5 scientific and research institutes, botanic garden, student health countryside camp, 3 student hostels. There is a multiuse playground with artificial turf, exercise machines, training halls for different types of sport, football field, two field-and-track sectors and four tennis courts. There are 20 educational and treatment buildings in the University. About 9000 students including 1900 people from over 60 countries are currently studying here.
The clinical campus of First Moscow State Medical University was founded in 1897; it was recognized as one of the best in the world at that time. It represents not only an inimitable architectural complex, famous historical monument, but a unique center where future doctors are trained, specialists with Degree are advanced in skills, research activities are done and the most seriously ill patients are treated at the same time. The clinical campus has been the groundwork for scientific and teaching process as well as multi-field center for high quality medical help for 100 years.
Research activities in development and implementation of new diagnostic and treatment methods, approbation of new medical products, medical technique are made in clinics and interclinial subdivisions. The University's clinics with their high qualified specialists, wide range of X-ray diagnostic including angiographic and computer tomographic researches, competent laboratory service, functional diagnostic service, endoscopic and ultrasonic diagnostic, medical genetics department, have got unique opportunities to do research activities, adoption of new forms and methods of work, modern medical technologies in the healthcare practice.
Six scientific and methodical centers of the Ministry for Healthcare of Russia are fully functional; they are Center for Somnology, Nephrology, Clinical and Laboratory Diagnostic and Scientific Educational Methodical Center for Analytic Toxicology, Moscow Specialized (only medical specialities) Center for New Information Technologies, etc. The University cooperates with different international organizations. The University's staff members are experts and consultants of the World Health Organization (WHO). Collaboration Centers of the WHO for Higher Nursing and Obstetrics, Tuberculosis, Tertian Malaria have been created in the University.
The University is the member of the International Universities Association. It has got contractual relationship with the Universities of the USA, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands and others. Over 300 staff members of First Moscow State Medical University go abroad pursuing exchange programs annually; the University receives about 100 foreign specialists every year; the students exchange is actively developing too. The proof of the University's great international status is its high rating in competitions between State Universities annually organized by the UNESCO.
Foreign students are provided with the accommodation at the hostel of the University for the whole period of studies.

Candidates for studies in Russian State Universities, who don't speak Russian language, are firstly admitted to the Foundation Course (duration is 1 academic year) to study Russian language and improve the level of knowledge in major special subjects up to the required for further study at the University on the chosen specialty. The charge for nostrification of foreign educational documents to obtain “Certificate of equivalence” in the Rosobrnadzor of Russian Federation obligatory for all international students is approximately 150 USD. Students prepare the set of educational documents and undergo the procedure of equivalency by themselves and at their own expence.
The above-mentioned fees for tuition, accommodation in student hostel, life and health insurance are valid only for 2010/2011 academic year.
Fees for tuition and accommodation in student hostels in Russian State Universities are fixed in Russian national currency – “Russian ruble”. Fees indicated in USD are approximate equivalent of tuition fees in Russian rubles by the time of processing this booklet. The actual cost for tuition and accommodation in Russian State Universities fees may be corrected slightly the date of invoice for tuition payment issuing in accordance with exchange rate USD – Russian ruble in the International Exchange Market.
During the initial registration procedure the candidate pays a registration fee of 300 USD which covers the charges for the issuance of the invitation letter for studies, sending the original and other documents to the candidate's country of the permanent residence by express mail, meeting the candidate at the international airport in Moscow, transfer and accompanying to the Institute, drawing up documents for admission to the Institute for studies, registration fee, etc.
Average food expenses are 200-300 USD per month. When first entering Russia, the candidate should have about 500 USD to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
