Novgorod the Great is one of the oldest Russian towns, which has retained its antique charm. Since the XIth century, Novgorod the Great has been a center of literacy and education. It was here that the earliest pieces of Old Russian literature first emerged to encourage people's love for books and knowledge.
Novgorod the Great is situated 150 km from Saint-Petersburg and is populated by approximately 350 000 people.
Novgorod State University, founded in 1932, bears the name of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Novgorod. As a kind of his nominal successor, the University thus carries on the Prince's mission of enlightenment, whose goal is to develop the Russian education and science for the benefit of the individual, the society, and the State. According to estimation by the European University Association, Novgorod State University is rated among the top ten of over a 100 best classical universities of Russia. The winner of many international awards, the University is the leading regional center of education, science and culture.
The University incorporates 4 institutes, the Academy of Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4 university general faculties and 5 colleges. At the 23 faculties of the University more than 60 specialities are taught in the areas of Medicine, Engineering and Technology, Economics and Humanities, including those that are available for postgraduate studies. Highly qualified teaching staff comprises Doctors of Science, and world recognized academicians. There is a special Center for Information Technologies, Marketing, an experimental plant and over 70 laboratories operating at the University, where students and scientists do their research in various priority areas of science and technique.
The University is technically equipped in accordance with the highest standards of the up-to-date technologies: there are 18 computer classrooms, a Web-laboratory, multimedia studio, conference halls, and presentation equipment. The department of Computer Technologies is one of the leading in the University. The high quality of education is ensured by the up-to-date syllabuses, which closely follow the current trends and perspectives of the world market, and the latest developments in the Information Technologies industry. Many of the courses are being designed within the framework of participation in the international educational programs organized by the global leaders in the IT industry, such as IBM (IBM Scholar Program), Cisco Systems (Cisco Networking Academy), Sun Microsystems (Sun Java Academy), Microsoft (Microsoft Academic and School Agreement).
The international activities of the University are in full swing: it currently has contracts of long-term cooperation with 26 universities of 11 countries, including the USA, Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, and Norway. The Oxford visiting program is working at the University, it allows students and young scientists to do their research, attend libraries and take advice from the specialists of one of the world's most prestigious universities – Oxford University.

Upon successful completion of the University, the graduate gets a higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating Degree/quali-fication and speciality. Candidates for studies in Russian State Universities, who don't speak Russian language, are firstly admitted to the Foundation Course (duration is 1 academic year) to study Russian language and improve the level of knowledge in major special subjects up to the required for further study at the University on the chosen specialty. The charge for nostrification of foreign educational documents to obtain “Certificate of equivalence” in the Rosobrnadzor of Russian Federation obligatory for all international students is approximately 150 USD. Students prepare the set of educational documents and undergo the procedure of equivalency by themselves and at their own expence.

The above-mentioned fees for tuition, accommodation in student hostel, life and health insurance are valid only for 2010/2011 academic year.

Fees for tuition and accommodation in student hostels in Russian State Universities are fixed in Russian national currency – “Russian ruble”. Fees indicated in USD are approximate equivalent of tuition fees in Russian rubles. The actual cost for tuition and accommodation in Russian State Universities fees may be corrected slightly the date of invoice for tuition payment issuing in accordance with exchange rate USD – Russian ruble in the International Exchange Market.


During the initial registration procedure the candidate pays a registration fee of 300 USD which covers the charges for the issuance of the invitation letter for studies, sending its original and other documents to the candidate's country of the permanent residence by express mail, meeting the candidate at the international airport in Moscow/Saint-Petersburg, transfer to the airport in Saint-Petersburg in minibus to Novgorod the Great (3 hours), meeting at the train station of Novgorod the Great and accompanying to the University, drawing up documents for admission to University for studies, registration fee, etc. The above mentioned amount doesn't include the cost of the airfare Moscow-Saint-Petersburg or train ticket Moscow-Novgorod the Great.
Average food expenses are 200-300 USD per month. When first entering the Russian Federation, the candidate should have about 500 USD to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
