“Physician - is a doctor for a human being, veterinarian – is a doctor for the mankind”, this is the way the notorious scholar, academic K.I.Skriabin characterized the profession of veterinarian doctor. In the whole world the profession of a veterinarian is considered as one of the most respected, prestigious, and literally one of the most humane. Veterinarians not only prevent, cure different animal's illnesses, but also protect people from diseases, which are common for both animals and humans. Furthermore veterinarians are responsible for production of qualitative live-stock products and also accomplish veterinary and sanitary inspecting of the environment. Nowadays, there is a steady demand for qualified veterinarians, who with the help of specialists in adjacent fields of knowledge are capable to react rapidly to the most serious and complicated challenges of modern world.
Saint-Petersburg state academy of veterinary medicine founded in 1808 is the oldest and one of the most prestigious Russian high educational center, which prepares specialists in the veterinary medicine. The department of veterinary medicine - the pioneer in preparing specialist with a high education in veterinary was opened in Saint-Petersburg medico-surgery academy in the very beginning of the 19th century. In 2008 Saint-Petersburg state academy of veterinary medicine celebrated the bicentenary of veterinary higher education in Russia. For more than two centuries of the Academy's existence there has accumulated a great experience in studying, prophylaxis, treating infectious and parasitic diseases of animals; extraction and producing inoculative materials, vaccine; inspecting sanitation-and-epidemiological situation.
The principal educational buildings of Academy are situated in the center of cultural and scientific capital of Russia – Saint-Petersburg, a city which is famous all over the world for its rich history, exquisite architecture, white nights. Saint-Petersburg is by right considered as the most beautiful city in the world. Numerous architectural monuments of Saint-Petersburg have a UNESCO status of the world heritage and are under its protection. Saint-Petersburg plays a leading role in political and economical life of Russia, Europe and the whole world. This is the second largest city in Russia with a population of more than 5 million people. Annually Saint-Petersburg hosts an international economical forum with participation of national leaders, business elite, scholars and public figures of the leading states of the world.
It was here that outstanding scholars of veterinary medicine such as: I.A.Kachinskiy, N.A.Pokshishevskiy, N.E.Cvetkov and many others worked. Moreover, Saint-Petersburg is the largest educational center of Russia. Numerous educational landmarks such as scientific center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and many other research institutions are situated in the city. The scientific and educational potential of Saint-Petersburg comes up to 15% of the total Russia potential what illustrates its federal and world significance. Saint-Petersburg is rightly called “the city of great opportunities”.
Nowadays Saint-Petersburg state academy of veterinary medicine belongs to the group of the top level universities and is regarded as the most popular high educational center which prepares specialists in all veterinary spheres. This is the leading Russian high educational center in veterinary. The Academy prepares highly qualified specialists in such fields of knowledge as: “Veterinary”, “Veterinary-and-sanitary expertise”. At the present time more than 2000 students from all continents of our planet study in the Academy.
The Academy offers education in the following departments: histology and general biology; radiobiology and healthcare; parasitology; clinical diagnostics; operative surgery; patalogical anatomy; physiology; diseases of birds, fishes, bees and furry animals; biological and organic chemistry; veterinary hygiene and sanitary; feeding of animals; anatomy of animals. 
The Academy offers postgraduate education in many veterinary fields of knowledge with further defence of a thesis (PhD).
The Academy is renowned for its brilliant and professionally skilled staff, more than 20% of whom are Doctors of Science, more than 50% - are Candidates of Science. It should be mentioned separately that 9 honoured workers of science and 14 academics function in the departments of the Academy.
The staff of the Academy has rich experience in educational spheres and scientific research which allows them to teach and impart accumulated knowledge to the young specialists and also to take part in scientific investigations, projects of practical veterinary. The research officers of the Academy contribute a lot in the development of protective services of environment of Saint-Petersburg and Russia in a whole. The existence of narrow-subject and branch-wise laboratories, highly technological facilities make it possible to perform researches which conform to the most high world standards. The results of the scientific researches are regularly published in the Academy's scientific magazines such as: “The International herald of veterinary”, “The questions of normative-and-legal regulation in veterinary”.
Modern educational buildings, spacious and comfortable auditoriums, huge, modern, always refilling library, and also 7 unique museums, particularly, pathologicoanatomic which is the largest in Europe, helps students to use their time rationally and assimilate knowledge properly. The charge for nostrification of foreign educational documents to obtain “Certificate of equivalence” in the Rosobrnadzor of Russian Federation obligatory for all international students is approximately 150 USD. Students prepare the set of educational documents and undergo the procedure of equivalency by themselves and at their own expence.

The above-mentioned fees for tuition, accommodation in student hostel, life and health insurance are valid only for 2010/2011 academic year.

Fees for tuition and accommodation in student hostels in Russian State Universities are fixed in Russian national currency – “Russian ruble”. Fees indicated in USD are approximate equivalent of tuition fees in Russian rubles. The actual cost for tuition and accommodation in Russian State Universities fees may be corrected slightly the date of invoice for tuition payment issuing in accordance with exchange rate USD – Russian ruble in the International Exchange Market.

During the initial registration procedure the candidate pays a registration fee of 300 USD which covers the charges for the issuance of the invitation letter for studies, sending the original and other documents to the candidate's country of the permanent residence by express mail, meeting the candidate at the international airport in Moscow/Saint-Petersburg, transfer to the domestic airport/train station in Moscow, meeting at the airport/train station of Saint-Petersburg and accompanying to the Academy, drawing up documents for admission to Academy for studies, registration fee, etc. The above mentioned amount doesn't include the cost of the airfare/train ticket Moscow-Saint-Petersburg. Average food expenses in Saint-Petersburg are 200-300 USD per month. When first entering Russia, the candidate should have about 500 USD to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
