Low temperatures and food technologies are one of the most dynamically developing branches of the world economy because this industry has always been distinguished by high requirements and stable volume of production.
Today the cold and heat surround us at every step. People all over the world use them in various forms: from food conservation, everyday use of air conditioners for rooms and cars' cooling, to the use of refrigerators for medical equipment or at sport establishments, etc.
It's hard to imagine our daily life without the refrigerator and the food industry. It helps us to wake up in the morning and start a new day with a fresh bun and hot tea or coffee, it takes care of our health controlling only fresh and high-quality meat, fishery and dairy products are provided, it lets us enjoy a tasty ice-cream, finally, it assures our comfort in the room by creating comfortable temperature. The life activity of the whole planet is ensured by processing and constantly developing low temperatures and food technologies.
Saint-Petersburg State University for Low Temperatures and Food Technologies was founded in 1931. It has perfect location in the historic center of Saint-Petersburg – the second biggest and the most beautiful city of Russia and Europe with a population of 5 million people. It is often called the Imperial capital of Russia for the majesty of its architectural ensembles, the charming beauty of its spires and the splendid luxury of its imperial palaces. Saint-Petersburg is the European center of Science, Culture and Education. The city plays a leading role in the political and economical life of Russia and of the world.
During the many decades of its work, the University became the leading educational establishment of Russia and Europe in the field of refrigeration and cryogenic technique, food technologies and technique. Over 40 000 specialists, 2 000 Candidates of Science and 80 Doctors of Science have been trained here. Today over 6 000 students and post graduate students study at the University. The teaching staff guarantees a high level of training, 75 % of teachers have got academic titles, and are honorary figures of higher education as well as science and technique of the Russian Federation. Over 40 people of the University's staff are members of International Institute of Refrigeration, International Academy of Refrigeration, International Higher Education Academy of Sciences, Engineering Academy and other scientific and international organizations.
The University comprises 4 educational establishments, modern computer laboratory, sport complex. Educational laboratories of cooling machines, food bio technologies, milk and dairy products technologies are constantly improved. The University incorporates modern computer and multimedia classes which are actively used in the educational process. Students study at the service centers of trade and home refrigeration; machines and airhandling units; international educational bakery center; beer and ferment technologies; sanitary and hygiene at enterprises of food industry; meat products technologies; industrial ecology, etc. The advanced achievements in the field of refrigeration and cryogenic technique, food production technologies and technique are part of the educational program. Virtual laboratory complexes have been created for several courses. There are over 1 million of books at the University's library fund.
Foreign students are provided with the opportunity to have extra Russian language classes at educational linguistic center of the University where they can get second higher education using the additional professional educational program “Interpreter in the field of professional communication” (English, German and French).
International conferences are annually organized within the framework of international programs. Students go for educational trainings to foreign Universities-partners, and to international summer camps.
The International Academy of Refrigeration was created on the basis of the University; it unites over 700 outstanding Russian and foreign scientists and specialist. The University for its scientific and practical activity, partners with foreign Universities and companies from Europe, America and Asia. Students are provided with the accommodation in the comfortable students' hostel during the whole period of education at the University. There is also a developed infrastructure: big supermarkets, trade zones and entertainment centers.
Upon successful completion of the University, the graduate gets a higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating Degree/qualification and specialty. The graduate also gets an additional document “European Appendix”, which allows the student to get its equivalence in any of 45 European and other countries signed up to the “Bologna Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications Concerning Higher Education” and to further education or apply for a prestigious job in these countries.

Candidates for studies in Russian State Universities, who don't speak Russian language, are firstly admitted to the Foundation Course (duration is 1 academic year) to study Russian language and improve the level of knowledge in major special subjects up to the required for further study at the University on the chosen specialty. The charge for nostrification of foreign educational documents to obtain “Certificate of equivalence” in the Rosobrnadzor of Russian Federation obligatory for all international students is approximately 150 USD. Students prepare the set of educational documents and undergo the procedure of equivalency by themselves and at their own expence.
The above-mentioned fees for tuition, accommodation in student hostel, life and health insurance are valid only for 2010/2011 academic year.
Fees for tuition and accommodation in student hostels in Russian State Universities are fixed in Russian national currency – “Russian ruble”. Fees indicated in USD are approximate equivalent of tuition fees in Russian rubles by the time of processing this booklet. The actual cost for tuition and accommodation in Russian State Universities fees may be corrected slightly the date of invoice for tuition payment issuing in accordance with exchange rate USD – Russian ruble in the International Exchange Market.
During the initial registration procedure the candidate pays a registration fee of 300 USD which covers the charges for the issuance of the invitation letter for studies, sending the original and other documents to the candidate's country of the permanent residence by express mail, meeting the candidate at the international airport in Moscow/Saint-Petersburg, transfer to the domestic airport/train station in Moscow, meeting at the airport/train station of Saint-Petersburg and accompanying to the Academy, drawing up documents for admission to Academy for studies, registration fee, etc. The above mentioned amount doesn't include the cost of the airfare/train ticket Moscow-Saint-Petersburg. Average food expenses in Saint-Petersburg are 200-300 USD per month. When first entering Russia, the candidate should have about 500 USD to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
